Hi I’m Isaac, a theatre director and heritage curator based in London. I specialise in making work which explores the social and cultural heritage of communities and locations which are at risk of being lost or forgotten, or who struggle to have their voice heard.
As a young queer person growing up in council housing in rural Oxfordshire, theatre and storytelling were one of the most important outlets I had and have fundamentally shaped the work I make today.
My practice is often research-led, using interviews and workshops, oral histories and archival research to build a rich picture of a community’s stories. I then work in partnership with the community, experts, theatre makers and other artists, to devise new pieces of theatre and curate other works of art, which explore and give life to those stories.
I also work with new writers and scripts and have a particular interest in work which explore myths, folklore and the supernatural, as well as working class history and queer narratives.
I have close to ten years’ experience in my field and have made, or worked on, theatre shows and heritage projects for spaces including the Roundhouse, Bush Theatre, Buckinghamshire Archives, Theatre Peckham, Pleasance, UCL and the V&A.
The difficulties I faced accessing arts and theatre provision, growing up in a rural location, have also had a strong impact on my work. I practice a wraparound approach with many of my shows and projects, making youth and community workshops an integral part of the process. As part of this I frequently run theatre workshops for a wide range of ages with organisations including the Roundhouse, Half Moon Theatre and Richmond Theatre.
